ColorSmart Omni-Channel Ecosystem

ColorSmart by BEHR is a global, omni‑channel digital ecosystem built to solve one of the biggest challenges in home improvement: color confidence. With millions of customers facing color paralysis, the platform helps people discover colors they love and instantly visualize them in curated interior scenes across web, mobile, and in‑store kiosks. Since its launch in 2003, it has become one of BEHR’s most recognizable digital properties and a foundational part of the brand experience across The Home Depot and international markets.

As the long‑time creative lead, I guided every major redesign and evolution of the system across its 20‑year lifespan. My work focused on simplifying complex decision pathways, reducing friction, and ensuring every color in the BEHR library could be visualized or purchased from any touchpoint. Through data‑driven UX strategy, iterative enhancements, and patented feature innovation, I helped shape a platform that increased engagement, strengthened brand affinity, and ultimately set the industry standard for color visualization.

The Visualization Engine Behind ColorSmart

ColorSmart’s omni‑channel reach is built on a visualization system I invented and refined over more than a decade. At the core of every ColorSmart experience — across web, mobile, kiosks, APIs, and international deployments is a masking system built on layered “gel” files and true‑color hex rendering. Instead of relying on third‑party services or server‑side image processing, this technique uses a base image, precise color-mapped layers, and highlight/shadow gels to produce accurate, immediate representations of any BEHR color. The result is a client‑side visualization engine that displays actual BEHR colors on walls, trim, and accents with exceptional fidelity, speed, and consistency across every touchpoint.

This innovation became the backbone of the entire ColorSmart visualization ecosystem, enabling offline apps, low‑latency web experiences, and scalable APIs that power partner brands and global markets. By eliminating external processing, the system has saved the company millions in operational costs, reduced technical dependencies, and dramatically improved user experience by delivering instant results instead of waiting on remote calls. Over the past 14 years, this approach has allowed ColorSmart to remain fast, flexible, and deployable anywhere, from 2,300+ retail kiosks to mobile apps in six countries. It continues to shape how millions of users explore and visualize color every year.
