In-Store Kiosk ColorSmart by BEHR®

When I started in 2003 the in-store kiosk had just been finalized and launched into the color display at The Home Depot stores. Over the next few years we iterated new ux improvements, added functionality, streamlined color services by utilizing my flash based recoloring system as well as optimized the code base into a flash based experience. In 2012 Behr digital, display and our development teams started overhauling the entire Kiosk in coordination with new hardware, codebase, UI/UX, content and design. The goal was to bring cohesion to the digital properties and have a consistent color search experience. With that update Behr implemented more data and analytic scripts to start making data based improvements over the years. Finally in 2023 the Kiosk was again overhauled with a simplified user experience and hardware update which is still being deployed in The Home Depot US and Canadian markets today.

2013 In-Store Kiosk Minimization Iteration
At this time I was co-leading the digital department and leading the digital UX and aesthetic design reporting directly to the CEO. We were coming off of a brand new website design, framework and CMS system. The objective for this update to the kiosk was cohesion with the updated digital properties and a consistent color search experience.

Optimized recolorization and color finding functionality
Going from my flash based recolorization technique to an HTML 5 solution. Optimizing the experience and consistency between the ColorSmart by Behr platforms. In addition added functionality to find and locate colors easily within the physical color fixture.

2019 In-Store Kiosk Maximalist Approach
By the time 2019 had rolled around the kiosk was in a desperate need of a full redesign as it had been riddled with incremental additions, reactionary solutioning, and quick to market changes to the minimized approach of 2013. This version required setting a new visual hierarchy to the added functionality as well as an additional way to find color through Color Discovery tool.

2022-23 In-Store Kiosk - Back to a focused approach.
After a few years of user testing and incremental adjustments analytics overwhelmingly stated that most all of the added functionality was not being used. The kiosk was trying to do too much and getting in the way of the user journey. The focus for this redesign was to streamline the data driven user experience and devise a way for the customer to seamlessly take their kiosk exploration with them.
